Government Approved Schemes
Below is a list of road schemes that the government has agreed to build. It
was formerly known as the Targeted Programme of Improvements (TPI).
Although the list looks quite long on the face of it, in fact the vast
majority of the schemes are simply junction improvements or short sections of
dualling (in many cases only 3 or 4 miles).
Several listed schemes have had their start dates put back by years, in some
cases repeatedly. A case in point is the A303 Stonehenge tunnel, which was to
start construction in early 2005 but has now been cancelled in 2007. The M6 Cumberland Gap was originally to be completed by 2003, but
is only now under construction.
Open Road is calling for all the schemes on this list to be progressed
for construction as soon as possible. Start dates are expressed in financial
years, which run from April-April (eg. 2006/7 means between April 2006 and April
2007).

by the English, Welsh and Scottish governments. The Prg column in the
list below shows the scheme's current progress against the
Road Construction Process. A status of 12 is the
final status where the scheme is ready to start construction, and just needs the
government to release the necessary funds.

Q. What's a "Grade Separated Junction"?
A. A Grade Separated Junction (or "GSJ") is a
motorway-style junction, where vehicles travelling straight
on on the main road do not have to stop, and vehicles join
and leave the road using slip roads.
Q. Does this list include all road schemes?
A. No, this list only includes centrally-funded
schemes on trunk roads. Smaller-scale bypasses paid for by
local authorities will not be listed.
